Jacob, 11, helps care for his mum, who has had part of her small intestine removed and is now partially reliant on TPN, a nutrition solution. Jacob assists her in preparing her equipment for TPN and helps around the home. He also helps with the childcare of his youngest brother, who is 1.5 years old, if his mum urgently needs to go to the bathroom or sort out her tubes.
His brother has Cystic Fibrosis, and Jacob helps ensure he takes his medicines and prepares his nebulizer treatments. He has suffered from increased anxiety and symptoms of PTSD since his mum became unwell, and she said, “He absolutely deserves the focus to be on him for once.”
She shared, “When I asked Jacob about a wish, he asked to stay in London with me, go on a shopping spree, and see a musical. Given that his brother has had Cystic Fibrosis since birth and that I became unwell, it’s very rare for the focus to be on Jacob. A wish of his own, centred entirely on him, will ensure he feels valued and appreciated, and I believe it will really boost his self-confidence.”
