My name is Eve, and I am 23 years old. Back in November of last year (a month after starting my new job at my local cancer hospital), I was diagnosed with lung cancer. It took a long time to get my diagnosis, but a few days after my 23rd birthday, I was hospitalised due to severe pneumonia. Finally, after a lengthy stay, I was discharged after being told I had a tumour.
As you can imagine, this was a major shock to me, as I have never smoked in my life! My hospital stay was really hard, as I was judged by staff and patients because of my age. As I have learned throughout my journey, this is very common for young people with cancer.
After life-changing surgery in February 2024, I went to UCLH in London for a special type of PET scan with my mum and sister. During our stay, we could only afford a cheap hotel next to the hospital. One evening, we got a taxi, and the driver got confused with our hotel and accidentally took us to the posh end of London.
We all laughed and had to tell him to go to the other end of town because we couldn’t afford that hotel. As we drove off, we joked, saying, “Oh, maybe one day.”
My mum is a two-time cancer survivor herself and has been by my side throughout my journey, as well as my sister, who was luckily on maternity leave and was able to look after me and my baby nephew.
My wish would be to stay over in London with my mum and sister at a posh hotel like The Ritz for the night and have a girly weekend without any medical appointments. As I am now in remission, this would be an amazing milestone to look back on and see how far myself and my family have come.
