Luke is 25 and lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive muscle-wasting condition that affects all his muscles, including his heart and lungs. He stopped walking at 13 and now relies fully on an electric wheelchair. He needs support with everything from getting in and out of bed to personal care, eating, and drinking.
Despite this, Luke leads a full and active life. He works from home, has a busy social life, and is often invited to attend conferences. He takes pride in his appearance and independence, doing what he can to stay involved and in control.
At Naidex, Luke saw a specialist bed that really caught his attention. It costs around £4000 and is fully adjustable, with a wireless handset. This bed would make a huge difference to his life. Right now, Luke has to ask for help every time he needs to be repositioned in bed. With this bed, he could adjust his position himself for comfort or pressure relief, especially during the night.
It would give him more control, better sleep, and help protect his health. Being able to raise or lower the bed would also make things safer and easier for his carers.
Most of all, it would give Luke a little more independence which means everything to him.
